Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in the front yard of my house after raking up and trying to get my son to play around in the leaves like I remember doing as a kid.

Time

This was in the afternoon of a cloudy day so everything was a little dark and grey. I had to make sure he was pretty still before taking it to get as much detail as possible.

Lighting

It didn't occur to me to do the focus in the center of the picture when I was taking it, but after getting it into Lightroom and playing around with the colors to make them pop, it just made sense to put the lighting focus on him in the center of all the leaves.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D800e without a flash, if at all possible I try to work without a flash. The lens is a Sigma 35mm, that I had just gotten and was playing around with.

Inspiration

I wanted to get a picture of our son that illustrated the season and brought out his innocence in one shot. I also liked the contrast of his orange vest against the brown leaves.

Editing

In lightroom I wanted to focus on him so I faded the corners and then really made the orange vest stand out from the rest of the picture

In my camera bag

I really try to travel light, I typically grab up my Nikon D800e, Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and depending on where I'm going I may take my wide angle 20mm f/1.8 and a flash just in case.

Feedback

What I've learned taking pictures of my son is that I have to walk a fine line of taking enough pictures to get the candid shots without him posing, but not too many that he totally ignores me so I can't get the shot I want of him looking at me.
