Behind The Lens

Location

I was invited to a model collaboration shoot organised by my best friend's cousin. It was taken in a 10 x 10 m garage in Narangba. I was sitting in a corner around makeup artists, hair stylists, another photographer, two small children, aged 2 and 4 and a Kelpie named Max.

Time

I arrived at the collaboration shoot after a very long night, excited, nervous twisting and turning around 1:30 on a Sunday. I introduced myself as a PHOTOGRAPHER, how proud I felt, my shoulders back, head held high and saying "my name is Belinda Matheson, I am a photographer, just finished my Diploma of Professional Photography and I am very excited about today, this is my first model collaboration shoot. I sat all day waiting for my chance to take some photos and finally around 7pm I got my chance.

Lighting

I was very nervous taking my very first shot of a very professional model, I knew she had had a lot of experience because she just knew the looks and moved with the last photographer perfectly. I was about 1.5 metres away and decided here I go, holding my breath as I took aim and manually set my focus on her eyes. I clicked away and all I had was a speed light and lighting from the garage ceiling.

Equipment

I was using in my mind the best equipment money could buy, a Nikon D800e, a Meike Speedlight MK900, a Nikkor 105 mm Prime lens. My nikon was set on ISO 100, f/4.0 and 1/125 sec. I did not use a tripod for the shot, and I went against the rule of turning my camera to the portrait position as I did not want to loose the background as I thought it added colour and uniqueness to the photo.

Inspiration

Photography has been my passion all of my life, learning how to develop film in high school, I cannot remember ever being without one. One of my favourite photographers, Mario Testino, his portraits of Princess Diana were amazing, stunning and I can look at them over and over. You look into the eyes, searching for answers but will never know now. I just love B&W photography another is W Eugene Smith, the black and white photograph of his own children, "Walk to paradise garden", has been voted as one of the best photographs of all time. When I look at this photo, I try to work out the story it is telling, it makes me think over and over where are they going, how lovely the older brother is holding his sister's hand, are they frightened, where are their parents, did they ever come home, this goes on and on in my head. This in my opinion makes for a GREAT photo.

Editing

This photo, I learnt photoshop post processing on and this is the final result of about 10 different looks. In the end i kept it natural and mainly corrected her skin, the background, smoothing out the fabric and removing some of the flowers on her face. The original back ground was the same as the fabric across her body but underneath the purple fabric was green organza. I used the history tool and changed the whole look of the photo to this final photo. This is one of my favourite all time photo AS I was only allowed to take ONE PHOTO. This is the one photo after sitting in a hot garage since 1:30 pm finally around 7 pm Sunday night.

In my camera bag

Looking in my camera bag right now: Meike Speedlight MK900 Nikon D810 2 x lens cleaning cloth Dust pump for cleaning inside your camera Nikon 50 mm lens Batteries for my speedlight Flash defuser SD cards, 8MB, 32MB, 4MB and 2MB's GPS fitting for GPS settings in Lightroom Business cards Nikkor 14 - 24 mm wide angle lens

Feedback

If you are trying to capture a similar look, remember you do not need fancy lighting of an expensive studio, wow it would be great to shoot in these settings but if you do not have the budget, just be creative. In the garage the walls were painted white and the back drop was a 2.5 m foam supported by cement blocks to hold it up. Grey carpet on the ground, model was draped with purple organza fabric and the back drop was green and purple organza. Model had a professional Hair and Makeup artist and jewellery was supplied by a Jeweller to gain exposure for her products. I used a full frame camera and a prime lens as I feel they are a beautiful lens giving a beautiful finish, they are crystal clear. Collaborate with others, bounce ideas between one another and you never know what you can come up with, you will be surprised at what friendship evolve or what amazing photo you can take. I feel never be afraid to share your knowledge of settings or how you have achieved you're amazing photo, the more the merry and learn from each other. Everyone is different, everyone sees different things in different ways, if you have the correct exposure, shutter speed and f stop, you have a great photo. Keep shooting, keep practicing and learn from your mistakes, some of the most famous photographers are self taught. If you like a photographer and want to shot like them, by all mean do not coping their photos as this is copywrite but try a similar composition and build from their, create your own style. Then lastly post your photos on "VIEWBUG" and you will soon see if people like your photos, people will comment, people will help with cc and most of all you could win competitions. Thank you Belinda Matheson Photography
