Behind The Lens

Location

This was a pretty spontaneous photo in our back garden. It's nice in the summer to lie on the grass and look at the stars, or just to read a good book. I get a lot of ideas from my garden, whether it's from the animals, flowers or people inside it.

Time

This was during the evening. Sometimes the darkness can creep up on you when you least expect it, so it's good to have a source of light on the go. The complete darkness was important for the atmosphere of the picture.

Lighting

I wanted most of the lighting to come from the torch. This way, you can see the book easily, but the glow also reflects back onto his face to make the expression really clear.

Equipment

I used my Canon 600D with an 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

Sometimes I like to challenge myself when I'm in a mundane situation to see what kinds of interesting photos I can take from it. I noticed the effect that the torchlight was making, and I wanted to try and capture it!

Editing

This photo is pretty much as it was in the camera!

In my camera bag

I've got my Canon 600D body as well as a 18-55mm lens, and a 55-200mm lens. Great for travelling light!

Feedback

Just be spontaneous! Be creative with whatever your surroundings are, and don't be afraid to try photographing different things from usual.
