Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph in my apartment. I believe the home is an extension of ourselves beyond the mind, body, and soul.

Time

This image was taken mid-afternoon. I don't seek out different times of day to shoot in particular lighting.

Lighting

I love natural lighting, there is something unique about the way it hugs the subject when you photograph. I'm also a big fan of high contrast. I like the duality of dark and light in an image, and how the highlights jump out at you and can quickly move your eye around the entire image. Then on the flip side, the shadows create a space to get lost in and keep you involved with the photograph for longer.

Equipment

This image was captured with a Nikon D40x, 18-55mm lens, tripod, and my handy dandy cordless shutter release remote

Inspiration

I think our most complex relationship we have is with ourselves. When I shoot, I'm able to release some emotions and express how I'm feeling by the movement of my figure. In this image, I was feeling lonely, feminine, and a little out of touch with myself. Sometimes I know exactly what I want to do and know exactly how to express that, but a lot of the time I can't even identify how I'm feeling. But once I've finished doing a shoot, and am able to look back on the photographs I took, I can start to piece together what I'm expressing

Editing

I do very little post-processing, in this image, I just layered one photograph on another, and chose an opacity that lets the image feel very identifiable at first, but really becomes a maze of trying to piece the whole figure together.

In my camera bag

Honestly, I don't own very much equipment, just the Nikon D40x, 18-55mm lens, and cordless shutter release remote.

Feedback

For those who wish to photograph themselves as I do, the most important thing is to make sure you're alone when you're shooting. We're at our truest form when we are by ourselves and aren't concerned with other people's judgments, and I think you'd be surprised what true beautiful art you can create when you surrender to your thoughts and feelings, and express yourself.
