I teach a bilingual 5th grade class in North Texas, where snow is not real common. This winter it snowed one day during school, and for some of our recent immigrants it was the first time they had even seen it. We dropped everything for a "teachable moment" and put on our jackets and went outside for a walk though the woods...the children's expressions were priceless! This little girl was so busy taking it all in, that when I called her to look up for a photo, she seemed to just have finished "processing" the cold, the white, the real winter...and she was so PROUD of her "winter clothes"...she said she felt like a "fashion model"...which is what she wants to be...so I took her picture, got her parent's permission to enter it into my gallery, and she will be able to see herself...online in her teacher's gallery!
