Location
I took this photo on Phillip Island which is located off the coast of Victoria, Australia. We had to walk down to the beach from the top of the cliff, there is a stairway of sorts to help along the way, then a walk across the rocks to get closer to the waves.Time
This was taken in the middle of the afternoon, we waited for the right time with an incoming high tide, there was a bit of wind which helped add to the drama of the wave crashing against the rocks.Lighting
It was a partially cloudy day but warm as it was in the summer. So we had strong light diffused with the cloudsEquipment
This was taken on a very basic Pentax DSLR, I no longer own the model. There wasn't any other equipment used due to the treck we had to take to reach the rock poolsInspiration
We were driving along the coast road when we saw this from the car, and I knew I had to capture the moment for prosperity.Editing
This image is straight out of the camera. A slight crop was used in post production but that was it.In my camera bag
These days I have quite a bit more equipment in the kit, I now use a Canon 5D MkIII and a selection of lenses. I keep a grey card and a variable ND filter with me at all times.Feedback
The best advise I could offer for this shot is to keep your camera on Shutter Priority and set to a high speed, you then need to wait for the wave to come in - look out to see so that you are aware when a larger wave is coming in. Remember to keep safety in mind as people can get knocked off or into the rocks with a deadly outcome. You can set your camera for continuous shooting so that you don't lose the one perfect moment.
