I took this photo at the San Diego Zoo.Time
I took this photo in the early afternoon in June.Lighting
Only natural light was used, no flash (it would have reflected off of the glass).Equipment
I used my Nikon D60 and an 18-55mm lens. I did not use a flash or tripod, although I was able to steady my camera on the railing in front of the gorilla enclosure.Inspiration
I was inspire to take this photo not only because of the beauty of the gorilla but also because of his expression, he looked lost in his own thoughts despite all of the people watching and kids running around just on the other side of the glass.Editing
I decided to use black and white for this image because I found the greens in the background distracting and I wanted a more simple image--no distractions so the only focus was on his face. I also increased the contrast of the raw image because I was trying to eliminate some of the glare and obvious imperfections of the glass.In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D60 and a D5200 with several lenses and a n external flash. My lenses include an 18-55mm, 55-300mm, 35mm, 50mm, and a micro lens.Feedback
My advice would be to position yourself in a way that doesn't disturb your subject, the more natural the better. Also, glass can be tricky, play with using flash and without to see which you prefer.
