This is great, The Arizona State Fair has the same ride every year. I have a shot of the same ride at a different angle. Your view is straight ahead; mine is at roughly a 35- 40 degree angle. Check it out if you get a chance. This is really a good shot. Congrats on your runner-up.

Location
Maryland State Fair, Timonium, MarylandTime
Evening - well after the sun had set.Lighting
Shooting lights at the fair can be harsh; I tried to find a spot to shoot this where the lights of the ride would be the feature, but the glow of the midway could still be seen to give them perspective.Equipment
Canon 5d Mark II, 24-105mm Canon L-series lens, no flash, and a monopod that had legs (smaller footprint than a traditional tripod) and a cable release.Inspiration
I really wanted to capture the ferris wheel (left); seems like everyone I've ever known has tried to capture movement by using the lights on amusement rides. As a kid I love the way the lights just made me feel happy - but I noticed that the Zipper moved in a much more interesting pattern once it started to loop all the way over. While I was experimenting with exposure I saw the full loop resulted in something that looked like a favorite childhood toy, a spirograph.Editing
I spent more time trying to get this shot than I did post processing it. While the ferris wheel ran at regular intervals, the Zipper didn't run as often and waiting for it to complete the loop seemed like it took forever. Post processing was simply a matter of dropping the shot into photoshop and lowering the luminosity of some of the brighter colors, white, yellow and increasing the saturation. I finished it with a little sharpening since I shoot all my images in raw.In my camera bag
Basic stuff, a 50mm fixed lens, a doubler, extra batteries, extra cards, a flashlight for night shooting to double check exposures and focus, cleaning cloth and shutter release. For something with a big crowd I travel as light as possible..Feedback
Be patient and never become so set on one thing not to notice other things around you. I had to patiently stand thru several rides before I figured the timing for how long I had to expose the shot for to capture the complete loop. On something like this I make sure I know any crowd policies before I go, bag restrictions, tripod restrictions. I try to stake out a spot of the way and check the results on the playback. Take extra batteries and have fun~!
