Location
This photo was taken at the Victory show in Leicester where they hold re-enactment battles i was concentrating mainly on doing black and whites to recreate the authentic era of the dayTime
the shot was taken mid afternoon during the re-enactment battle unfortunately you have to be dictated to by this and not be able to compose and take the shot at your leisureLighting
i noticed during the re-enactment that even though they were only putting a charge in there to create the bang it still produced muzzle flash even the machine guns which i noticed first, firing blanks were also creating muzzle flash but i wanted something bigger than a machine gun the tanks were all on the other side of the battlefield that's when i noticed the field gun nestled between the haystacks so i manoeuvred myself through the crowd to get a good positionEquipment
handheld nikon d7000 and a 70-300mm i tend not to use a tripod at all which was a big waste of money :)Inspiration
i love taking ww2 photos and going for the look of authentic photos from that era but this one just worked better in colourEditing
very little post processing just hit a preset to give it an antique look in fx proIn my camera bag
nikon d7000 16-85 and 70-300 lenses plus a good cloth for keeping my glass clean as when shooting vehicles be it aircraft or tanks you tend to get oil spots on the front which can ruin a good shot however i have just rated myself to the d7100 which has yet to have a test runFeedback
think about what you want to capture what the end result is to be, i'm sure you've read this everywhere but it really does help to have an understanding of your subject, in this case knowing what they are doing and the short pauses between loading and firing so when i press the trigger i'm not shooting 10-20 photos and the camera starts to buffer at the critical moment then you miss the shot that you want and just end up with a load of smoke that obscures everything
