West Point, as with all other military academies (and the military in general) is based heavily on traditions, and the uniform is the same. The West Point jacket shown was worn by a senior cadet in the 1930s, and has not changed since its introduction in 1814. This style uniform is one of the longest running traditions, remaining virtually unchanged from uniforms worn by General U.S. Grant, General Robert E Lee, and is still virtually identical to the dress uniform worn by cadets today.
The ball-chevrons on the sleeves indicate years completed (3 years complete), and mark that it was worn as a senior. The rank on the sleeves indicates that the wearer was a Sergeant (in the Academy) at the time of the uniform being retired.
