Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. I go there for wildlife photography and to be with my thoughts, and that day it had finally felt warm after a long, cold winter, and I saw this couple riding by on their tandem bike and snapped the shot without thinking.

Time

It was in the mid-afternoon on a bright, warm, April day.

Lighting

As an amateur nature photographer, I use natural lighting exclusively. It was a bright, sunny day that day; that's all I needed to light this shot.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D90 with its kit lens (Nikkor AF-S 18-105mm, 3.5-5.6G) at ISO 800 and f/5.6.

Inspiration

I remember feeling pretty content that day, as it was our first warm day in months. I was just enjoying walking outside and seeing life reawaken, especially the massive amounts of magnolia blossoms (some of which are seen in the background of this photo). I saw the couple riding on the tandem bike and noticed how happy they seemed and snapped the shot on instinct.

Editing

All I do is tweak contrast and saturation in post-processing. Nothing more than that ever.

In my camera bag

I'm a bare-bones amateur photographer. My bag has a spare battery and a couple of spare memory cards, as well as a lens cleaning cloth. That's it.

Feedback

The only advice I can give for getting this kind of shot is to be aware of what's happening around you. Feel the entire scene. If you're a part of it, you can be attuned to what's going on almost without even realizing it and you'll be ready for the shot when it presents itself.
