Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Western Australia's South West at a beach called Castle Rock.

Time

We were on holiday and this is the first stop off on our road trip, after stopping for breakfast and a quick top up of oil in the local town of Dunsborough we reached Castle Rock at 11:30am when this photo was taken.

Lighting

The lighting as being in the middle of the day was strong, as I wanted to get the misty look in the water used a couple filters to stop down the light.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 6D with a 24-105L F4 lens, mounted on a tripod with Haida 3.0 and a Hitech Reverse Graduated 0.9 filters.

Inspiration

Being on holiday I wanted to document everything on the trip, and had the perfect opportunity to experiment with my new filters, I loved the textures of the rocks and movement of the water.

Editing

Being this photo was taken a couple years ago, I was fairly new to photography, if my memory serves correctly I was only using Canons Native Raw editing program. The Hitech reverse Grad has quite a magenta caste so with my limited knowledge I've converted it to black and white, problem solved right? hehe. I had made some usual local adjustments and cropped to how I liked the image to look. Keep a eye out for a re-edit of this image, I see lots that can be corrected and now I know how and have the programs to do it.

In my camera bag

The equipment I carry in my bag depends on what I'm planning to shoot for that outing. A typical seascape shoot I'll pack my bag with my Canon 6D with the 17-40L F4 lens attached, I'll also take my 24-105L in the pocket. Next thingi would take is my filter pouch containing my Haida 3.0, 1.8, 0.9 and Polariser, next would be my Hitech reverse graduated filter with holder. I also bring my wireless remote and spare batteries, a cloth for when my filter gets sea spray and a lens pen, and my pouch of spare SD cards. One thing I won't go anywhere without is my old Canon AE-1 loaded with film, film is where my journey started and I enjoy using it as much as I can.

Feedback

First and foremost have fun and experiment. For daytime long exposures you need a filter unless it's a overcast day. Think of your composition, move around the scene to get the shot you want, even if your shoes and socks get wet. And be patient, wait for the perfect time to capture the image your after.
