Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture last December in my hometown of, Pacifica, Ca. Our weather here on the coast has been really unpredictable, over the last few years. This was a rare December evening about mid month. Warm , about seventy degrees in the day, but the temperature was dropping fast. Normal is in the mid to low fifties.. I looked out my front window that faces the Pacific ocean and the sky was yellow. I had never seen it that color before. Even thought I lived here for over forty years. It was close to sunset so I hurried over to the beach. I didn't use a flash and just hoped there was enough lighting I took several pictures, as the sun lowered. I have three of them in my wall all within a few minutes of each other.

Time

I believe, being almost winter in a few days, it was around 5:30 pm. I had missed several fantastic sunsets in recent weeks that were covered by fog within minutes.

Lighting

I really don't like using flash if I have to. I feel it takes away from the natural beauty of the shot.I have an Olympus digital. I hope to get an upgrade some day for better zooming abilities, but I really like this camera. I used the automatic and the sunset settings on my camera.

Equipment

An Olympus SP5-STOUZ, 7.1 MP, 10x optical Ed zoom with an extension. It has twenty different lighting abilities and numerous special features I haven't even used yet. It has over 20 light settings for the scene you are shooting. I like the 2" screen for viewing or shooting and the eye viewer for bright days. Just my speed not too complicated.

Inspiration

I see sunrises and sunsets as spiritual. I grew up seeing sunrises on my way to school and since I moved here and being a few blocks from the Ocean I treasure each one. I would always grab my children and make them look at the pretty sunset. Their Portugese grandfather would have them sit on the beach and watch the ship at the horizon turn into a sailboat then a skiff. I could never quite see it, but the kids did.

Editing

I haven't got that talented yet.

In my camera bag

Extra batteries ,first lens cleaners and I hope to get another extension for close up shots.

Feedback

Watch the skies. I am lucky because I face the ocean. usually after a heavy rain, or before is when I get nice sunsets. Even with the fog. Just before sunset is a great time but you have only about fiftreen minutes. Just keep shooting each one is different.I actually won a local contest a few yours ago for pictures of this pier. I saw the sunset and hurried over there, and the sun had gone down already. So I snapped a few pictures with the shadow of the fisherman. Similar to the one I have on my Viewbug wall. Mine won because out of hundreds of entries, because mine was the only one that was at twilight. No flash. And the water was purple. I was shocked, but it sent me on my way to become a serious photography. I still have a lot to learn.
