One weekend I toured the "Brewmaster's Castle" in Washington DC. In the dinning room on the credenza was this doll. The Docent explained as with all things there was a good bit of superstition around the number 13.

So, if the numbers of guest exceed 13 - they would sit this on the table as the 13th guest.
