Behind The Lens

Location

In my studio.

Time

I honestly cannot remember :) It was taken some time ago. As it was shot in film, there is no metadata either.

Lighting

The lighting is effectively being reflected from the mirror, so in effect I had to work backwards when setting it up to get the results I wanted, which was a soft, but directional light with a bias from above to replicate the look of a steam filled bathroom.

Equipment

Mamiya RB6x7, with 105mm lens, and shot on Fuji Provia 100

Inspiration

It was just an idea I had when noticing a friends reflection in a window. There was condensation on the glass and I liked the effect it had. Nothing more than that. When I see things that interest me visually, I store them away for later use. I used it here to imply a sexual narrative... we can only see her face in profile and reflection.. why are her eyes closed... what's happening?

Editing

None whatsoever. It was shot on E6 slide film.

In my camera bag

Depends... I have several bags, and lots of cameras. It varies from job to job. Medium format film gear consists of a Mamiya RZ67, 50mm, 105mm and 180mm. Digital is mainly a D800E, with 24-70 f2.8 and a standard lens. I keep gear simple. People take photographs, not cameras.

Feedback

Think visually... get your inspiration from the world, from people, from movies, from poetry.. anything... but don't follow ANYONE'S advice... find your own feet and find your own tone of voice. Look at LOTS of work by other people, but do not copy it - just let it wash over you, and it will start to come out in it's own way in your own work. Know photography... it's history... who the great movers and shakers were. Widen your horizons photographically. Good photography is not about gear and processing and watching you tube tutorials. Some of the best photographers in the world had none of that, and they're still some of the best photographers the world has ever seen.
