Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by myself. I am an amateur photographer. This was taken in an Indianapolis suburb, Lawrence. The water you see in the background is actually just our neighborhood pond. I was babysitting my neighbors when I took this so this is their backyard.

Time

This is approximately 11A.M. It is early June and in Indiana early June mornings begin crisp but become more intense as the day continues. This was a particularly cool morning and the wind was blowing a refreshing breeze. It was the perfect June morning for photography.

Lighting

I did not use any flash. I am facing west. Because it is early in the morning and the sun rises from the east the sun would have been behind me which allowed for such great lighting. I was actually trying to capture the lighting on the pond but changed my mind when I saw the detail in the flower.

Equipment

Believe it or not, this was actually just taken with an iPhone 4. It was all I had on me because if you bring a fancy camera to babysit some kids the parents might be a little concerned.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo was the glimmer on the pond. I was sitting outside watching my neighbors and looking out at the lake, the wind was blowing just enough to create a small wake. The sun was shining from the east and it created the perfect glimmer. I got out of my chair to take a picture of the lighting on the water, but this bulb on a onion caught my eye. I used the onion bulb as the foreground and the pond as the background creating the picture you see.

Editing

I chose not to do any post-processing on this photo. There is no filter and I did not adjust anything like lighting. Most of my photos have no post processing effects. I believe my photos are at their best when there is no false adjustments made. Especially with nature shots, I like to leave them in their natural form.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around my Nikon D40 with several lenses. I always carry around my standard lens that came with the camera, this is because I have several lens I can attach to the standard lens. I have a fisheye and wide angle lens with me almost always. I like to use the fisheye for close up shots and the wide angle for landscapes. However, my favorite lens is my Nikkor AF Zoom lens. I believe it is a 70-300mm lens. When traveling to the beach my underwater digital camera is tied to my wrist at all times. I use my phone for quick shots and video. Every where I go my camera is around my neck and my phone is in my back pocket.

Feedback

If I had to give any advice to an upcoming photographer I would tell them about priority. Photos are made spectacular by the angle and the foreground and background. Anyone can take a decent picture but the best understand the necessity of a good foreground and background. For example, my foreground here is the flower and my background is the lake. I think as a photographer you should always look for a good foreground and a good background. Get artsy!
