Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of 3 lionesses, a mother Indu and her two cubs, Maliya and Zarina was taken at Paignton Zoo shortly before Maliya joined her two brothers in leaving Paignton Zoo to continue the breeding programme elsewhere.

Time

It was around 5:00pm when I took this shot, the big cats are always more lively just before they go inside for the night, this one evening, before Maliya left for Germany, the 3 of them rolled around and played together.

Lighting

The lighting of course is all natural, it was just beginning to get dark however the enclosure was still fairly bright.

Equipment

I used a handheld Canon EOS 1100d equipped with a 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I knew that Maliya, one of the cubs pictured, would soon be leaving for her new home in Germany and was hoping to get a shot of all 3 together before she left, when they started to 'cuddle' and roll around together I couldn't resist a photo!

Editing

No post-processing.

In my camera bag

On a trip to the zoo I will usually carry a Canon EOS 1100d with a 70-300mm lens, a 18-55mm lens and a 17-85mm lens.

Feedback

Animal / wildlife photography is purely based on patience, this shot was not taken immediately after arriving at their enclosure, but after spending several hours waiting for a shot of all 3 together, to get a photo of any animal all you need is patience.
