Behind The Lens

Location

The foto was taken at the Gaasbeek Highland Games in Belgium in May 2013.

Time

The photo was taken at about three in the afternoon.

Lighting

This cloudy day unleashed a dialogue between light and shadow, both playing with the audience creating a special atmosphere just before the girl in the picture threw her stone towards victory.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I was quite amazed when I saw the women performing at the Highland games and especially impressed about the women's discipline called the "Stone put" where they throw a stone weighing between 13–18 lb. I wanted to capture the feeling I had when I was watching this wonderful spectacle.

Editing

Cropped the picture slightly and optimised the black & white version.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark III, wide-angle lens Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Tele lens Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Flash Speedlite 430ex II and a Canon lens EF 50mm f1.8 II, a Manfrotto tripod and/or monopod depending on the shoot. That's about it on a level of standard gear.

Feedback

First of all, make sure to be well prepared (technically) as for this kind of shots you want to be able to just take your time to observe, understand and feel the dynamics of the game and focus on the shot you want to take. Then, relying on all your senses, anticipating that one decisive moment, you will suddenly feel everything coming together just before you take the shot and capture this unique moment in time...
