Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during our Alaska trip into Denali National Park. It was an all day venture in a school bus type vehicle on a bumpy, dirt road some 29 miles into the park. The day was somewhat overcast and we were a little disappointed that we couldn't see more of the landscape and indigenous animals, but just as we got to the furthest part of our ingress into the park, the skies cleared and the majestic Mt. McKinley showed all its glory !

Time

The picture was taken on an early afternoon in August, taking advantage of the low sun angle to provide subtle foreground lighting while providing magnificent definition of the distant snow capped mountain crags and crevices.

Lighting

When you're on an excursion such this one, where you have little control of your location and timing, it becomes more of a matter of being at the right place at the right time, and more importantly, being able to recognize the photographic opportunities and visualize the end results.

Equipment

This picture was taken with a tripod mounted SONY DSLR a-100 and a 70-300mm lens set at a 105mm (35mm equivalent) It's comprised of a series of 5 shots, at ISO 100, 1/200 sec, and varied f stops to accommodate exposure. that were stitched together in Photoshop with minimal adjustments to color correction and saturation.

Inspiration

The vastness of nature and the majestic presence of the mountain was the only inspiration anyone, who was fortunate to find themselves in this location, at this precise moment, would need.

Editing

Minimal color correction and saturation adjustments were made to blend the individual frames.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry a single DSLR (presently a full frame SONY alpha 99)with an 18-70mm and 70-300mm lenses. Additionally an on-camera flash and tripod and/or monopod. On this particular venture I carried my SONY A-100 w/ lenses and a SONY F-828.

Feedback

Like I said, it's not like you can manage nature, just keep your eyes open to the opportunities it presents ..don't obsess the technicalities.. be creative ... and enjoy !
