Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the side of the bridge leading unto Eileen Donan Castle. Most images of Eileen Donan are taken from the north facing back across the loch or from the south. I wanted to try something slightly different.

Time

It was taken early afternoon on a visit to the castle with my family.

Lighting

It was a very grey cloudy day with some drizzle, so the light was soft for the time of day.

Equipment

This shot was taken hand held with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8 II USM lens.

Inspiration

This Castle is a very special place for me and my wife, I proposed to my wife here and four years later we were married here as well.

Editing

With this shot I increased the clarity a bit and adjusted the shadows and highlights to try and get the best out of the grey dull sky.

In my camera bag

My bag usually contains my Canon 7D with a Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L II USM and a Canon EF 70-300 f/4.5.6L IS USM lens, Gitzo tripod, Really Right Stuff ball head and a set of Lee filters. I do have a few other lens but I have tried to reduce the amount of weight I carry so change the lenses in my bag depending on wahat I am going to photograph.

Feedback

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland so any advice I could give is try to get something different, try a different angle or perspective. I think this place has been shot to death so getting something different would be very hard. The weather is always changing in this part of the country so being patient and waiting an hour or so may pay dividends to give a dramatic sky or the chance of a passing Typhoon, as the RAF use the area for training.
