This photo was taken in Oct 2010 on the Tibet side of Mt. Everest.
In 1990, I was one of eight member of the 1990 American Pumori Expedition, a mountain directly across the valley from Mt. Everest in Nepal. I'm proud to say I have been on and photographed both sides of Mt. Everest now. My favorite and most treasured photo is my 20x30 photo enlargement of Mt. Everest in a close up of the peak during sunset where it is set in a bright orange color. I took the photo in 1990 and met Sir Edmund Hillary at the 1991 Mt. film festival in Telluride, Colorado and had him sign my 20x30 photo that I now have framed and hanging in my living room with all my other photos. I try to tell people that most any dream can come true if you set your mind to it. The 1990 American Pumori expedition trip was my "Ultimate" trip in the world, only to follow up with it by returning to Tibet and once again seeing Mt. Everest from the other side. Dream big and set your mind to what you want most in life. It can be done if you really want something.

Behind The Lens

Location

It was 20 years, in Oct 1990 when I was on the Nepal side of Mt. Everest that I said I would return in 20 years, and with time, patience and planning, I did, but this time it was on the Tibet side. I was one of eight members of the "1990 American Pumori Expedition", a mountain across the valley from Mt. Everest. I have a 20x30 enlargement of Mt. Everest in an Orange glow that I had "Sir Edmund Hillary" sign. Next was Oct 2010, when I flew from my home town of Austin, Texas, to New Jersey, up and over the Artic, and landed in Beijing, China. I was alone with my camera bag and carry on bag only. I stayed at the International Hostel, just blocks away from Tejiman Square. Next was the two day train across China to Lhasa Tibet. Here, I met my guide and tour group for two days of sight seeing before the eight of us headed out in our ten person bus for a two day trip up and over and around and through the Himalayas of Tibet. Here in Tibet, the bus drove us all the way up to 17,500 Everest Base Camp. On the Tibet side, it requires a five day trek to Nepal's Everest Base Camp at the same elevation of 17,500 ft. After a night of camping in some large group tents and trying to eat something I would describe like a pancake, the next day, I left my tour group for my quest across the Himalayas on my own. Yes, I hitched a ride from base camp, or at least someone arranged a ride for me with another couple in their rented jeep. I joined them and their two guides for a short cut through the high desert plains of the Himalayas. It was this short cut rather then going back the way we came in and going around. It was a true adventure of a different kind, at 17,500 ft. It was on the border of Tibet and Nepal for the night were we rented another ride on to Kathmandu. This was now my second trip of "Going to Kathmandu".... The song, well, been there done that....twice. After a few days in Kathmandu, I caught the bus to "Chitwan National Park", on the border of India for a few days before getting two bus riders and a train ride into and through India before I finally made it to New Delhi , where I spend a few days resting before flying home. This was my "$4000, 3 week trip, where I was alone with only my camera bag and small carry on bag" It was my "Across the Himalayas" book someday.

Time

The Photo was later in day after a long bus ride.

Lighting

As with most any important photo, always take several, so you have many to chose from. I started my photography with 35 mm negatives, so take advantage of your opportunity for enhanced photos with todays technology.

Equipment

I was still shooting 35 mm negatives at the time in Oct 2010. Used a Canon Camera.

Inspiration

The photo was in the shadows, so it gave a different perspective to the photo.

Editing

no

In my camera bag

Being a backpacker all my life, I'm generally carrying only my camera body, one small lens 28-80, and a longer zoom lens of 60-300. I carry the camera and lens in my bag that goes around my waist.

Feedback

Enjoy the moment as a photographer, because a lot of people that go to some of these special places just snap a few photos and move on. But we as photographers get to savor the moment for a long time to come as we look back at our collection of out standing photographs.
