Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Aguille du Midi in Chamonix. You exit the cable car at 3,842 meters where you see the structure at the top of the photo. From that point you begin skiing the 2,700 meter descent through the Valee Blanche. It's an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Time

This was taken at the end of the day, after skiing down from the top. You actually wrap around on the backside of this shot, continuing down and to the left. You end up back in Chamonix where this was taken from.

Lighting

The end of day lighting provided me with the opportunity to focus your attention on the peak.

Equipment

This was taken with my Canon EOS Rebel T1i and a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 55-250mm 1:4-5.6 IS. F4.0 ISO 1600.

Inspiration

Skiing is my ultimate passion, and skiing the Vallee Blanche from the top of the Aguille du Midi is the highlight of my year, every year. I often look at this photo in August to pull me through the final days of summer.

Editing

I don't recall messing with this shot at all. It was just one of those shots.

In my camera bag

I never go anywhere without my beat up Canon Rebel T1i with its Canon EFS 18-55mm and my even more abused Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 55-250mm. They never let me down, no matter how wiped out I get.

Feedback

Shoot what you love. Just make sure you're patient and wait for light that's magical. In the mountains, great shots often take planning. If you're on the wrong side of the mountain at dawn, you'll have to wait until the end of the day for that perfect light.
