Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the "Geelkrans" conservation area, Stillbay, South Africa. One of my favorite early morning hikes when visiting Stillbay.

Time

This was very early in the morning. On the hike it is impossible to get back to the exit unless high tide is subsiding. During summer time the sun rises just after 6am. While waiting for the tide to go out, I was mesmerized by the rocks, sun and foam from the waves.

Lighting

Sunrise is always the perfect time to use the best nature offer for stunning pictures. Using natural light, colors and textures.

Equipment

This was taken with my "old faithful" Canon SX500 fixed lens. All I needed to do is to get a little wet and protect the SX500 from the water it self.

Inspiration

I am never ever without a camera when I go out the door. My mentor told me once that if you are in nature, nature will always surprise you, and if you are without your camera, you will at some point be disappointed when everything is just right for that awesome picture, that you missed! It happened twice in my life and I am still regretting the pictures I have missed!!! Although I am not a professional photographer, I always try to find beauty to capture any where I go. Photography taught me the most important lesson: Open your eyes, be aware of your surroundings, appreciate everything on your way . You then will be rewarded with images that tells a story.

Editing

No post-processing was used. The SX500 is a little gem on any day. It has everything for a quick shot if something catches your eye. Perfect in your backpack on a hiking trail. I always try and try again to capture what I feel and see. That is why digital is bliss. My personal opinion is not to take a picture with photoshop in the back of my mind. Personally I prefer to take the time, feel the moment, and then take the shot.

In my camera bag

My SX500 is always in my handbag. When doing serious photography, big brother EOS700D 55mm/300mm lenses and tripod is the only equipment I need.

Feedback

Remember to observe, get the image you want to take in your heart. Move around to find the right angle and don't be afraid to get wet, dirty or in awkward positions!! Remember that your picture is that image of what you want others to see and feel.
