Location
This photo was taken in one of my favorite locations on the eastern plains of Colorado. It's behind a grocery store just outside the town of Byers, which is about 40 miles east of Denver.Time
It was late day, getting near sunset with summer thunderstorms in the area. This was my last location of the day.Lighting
The lighting is all natural.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 10-24 lens. The shot was handheld using the frame of my car window with some bracing.Inspiration
The lighting and the cloud formations were fantastic, and I knew I the lone tree in this location would make for a good composition. When I got to the location, I lucked out with beams of light coming down right on the tree.Editing
There wasn't a lot of post processing with this photo. The base exposure in the RAW file was pretty good, so I just adjusted white and black levels and increased the contrast and clarity. No color adjustments were made.In my camera bag
I carry three lenses in my bag, a Tamron 17-50, Nikkor 10-24, and Nikkor 55-300. I also have a Lightning Trigger for weather photography, a Sekonic L-358 light meter, Nikon M-36 release cable, a Vanguard tripod and Vanguard window mount.Feedback
Scouting locations before you ever take a photo is important. This photo would never have happened if I hadn't been there before. The location in this case is not immediately obvious.
