Location
This photo is taken down the coast of a small mining town called Nebida in the west part of Sardinia Island, Italy. The shore offer a great view of the cliffs and the big rocks on the water, you can reach this place with a medium difficulty trek, not dangerous or long.Time
It was the first time I've visited this place with my camera so I arrived at least 1 hour before the start of the sunset. I got many time to study the place and the final composition already thinking about a long exposure to capture this spring sunset.Lighting
I usually don't shoot extreme long exposure of the sea but in this case, trying some new filters I was able to create a kind of fog using the long shutter speed and the movement of the waves having in final the water like a white smoke but with the clouds still in shape on the horizon. The red part on the left side of the photo was covered by a thin layer of clouds, giving a soft tone to the sunset.Equipment
Right now I use a Nikon D600 full frame camera with a Manfrotto Tripod and panoramic head. I have four nikon lens like the 50mm f 1,8 / 24-70 f 2,8 / 70-200 f 2,8 and my wide lens Nikon 16-35 f4. At the time of this shot anyway I used the Nikon D90 Body plus Tokina wide lens 11-16mm f 2,8. I use also a Nikon SB900 flash when I shoot events while for landscape I had different grad filter from LEE.Inspiration
I always followed many great photographers of landscape and nature, both in the style of extreme long exposure or more "natural" photos. I live in Sardinia, an Italian Island and my home is in front of the beach. When I had the first chance to buy the ND filters I was totally excited to try to reach the results of the photographers I was following, changing the point of view of the nature in my mind and playing with exposure and the waves to capture this photo.Editing
I develop my raw using Adobe Lightroom to improve contrast, adjust highlights and shadow and giving a little more of clarify and some more vivid tones and saturation. I had to adjust the white balance a little cause the final exposure after the use of the filter was too blue. Nothing more to play with programs, the results was already fine for me.In my camera bag
Weight is a problem, specially with prime lens so it depends on what I am going to shoot I change my bag to have better mobility. I can say that 80% of the time in my bag I have my wide lens Nikon 16-35 plus the 24-70. I find those two lens really useful specially in travel when I have to make landscape photo with the wide lens and use of Neutral Density filters and also to take some portrait or take photos of festival in villages, street and more. In my travel bag I also recently added the use of the 50mm, really good lens for taking portrait and details and also really light.Feedback
Have only few advise about this. For sure there are a lot of guide in Internet about long exposure shot in landscape. It's not only about right equipment, right filter ect. Just choose the best places and weather situation to capture movement of water, the flow of the clouds and many more scenary. Don't just force yourself to take photos of 30 or 60 seconds of every angle you see just to make long exposure. Realize what can be better in long exposure and what can be more interesting with a short time.
