Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Pontsticill Reservoir, Wales. One of my favourite places where I live.

Time

This was my very first astrophotography experience. I was working on a project during my university course which resulted in me being out late shooting and I just had to give it a go!

Lighting

I like natural lighting and what's better than the light of the stars! (a fascination of mine).

Equipment

A tripod is imperative in astrophotography. This was shot with a Nikon d3200 using a standard 15-55mm kit lens. That and a remote shutter.

Inspiration

I've always been fascinated with astronomy and since having taken up photography it was always something I've wanted to try.

Editing

I didn't do a lot of editing, I always try to keep it to a minimum. A couple of tweaks to the contrast, highlights, shadows and contrast. But still not a massive change.

In my camera bag

Usually I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, 28mm f/2.8, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro, 24-70 f/2.8. A Nissin flashgun, remote shutter release, coloured gels and a lens cleaning cloth.

Feedback

Use the manual option on your camera and set you ISO to 1600, open your aperture as wide as it can go and experiment with the effects of the shuttle speed lengths.
