Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favorite surfing photos. It was taken at Oceanside pier in California.

Time

This is the early morning session when the swell was in great shape. The pier was lined with photographers looking for great shots. I knew it was going to be a great day and I skipped my morning math class to take this.

Lighting

The morning light coming from the east made this shot easier as it lit the surfers and water up very nicely.

Equipment

The gear I use is pretty much entry level. The camera for this shot was a Nikon D60 with 55-200 lenses. I did feel a little outmatched standing next to the professionals but I had so much fun.

Inspiration

This was taken for a photography class I was enrolled at. Our assignment was to create a book and I focused on what makes San Diego great.

Editing

This photo did not require any post processing.

In my camera bag

My normal setup is a Nikon D60 with kit lenses. I have a Nikon DX 55-200 along with a Nikon VR 18-55.

Feedback

For a shot like this I visited the pier many times prior to that morning. I went morning, noon and night to get a feel for conditions at certain times of the day. It also made me comfortable when I showed up and the pier was lined with photographers because I knew what I wanted. When I heard the surf report that morning I knew it would be a good day.
