Behind The Lens

Location

Ala Moana Beach park on Oahu, Hawaii

Time

This is an event that only happens once a year on memorial day. This was abut 7pm

Lighting

There is not much light other than the lanterns floating on the ocean and the moon. so the shutterspeed is set kind of low and I bumped up the ISO.

Equipment

Hand held the Nikon D300 in manual mode waist deep in the water. I used the Nikon lens 18-200mm so I didn't need two lens

Inspiration

Every year I am inspired by the beautiful lanterns that are sent out to loved ones and the messages written on the lanterns are heart warming. I always send out my own lantern for my family. There are usually over 50,000 people on the beach but there is a strong sense of Aloha spirit and a calm and peaceful attitude among everyone there. I am inspired to take pictures there every year on Memorial day.

Editing

The only post processing was developing in lightroom from a Raw format and exporting to jpeg.

In my camera bag

when I'm shooting in the water I only bring my one camera Nikon D300 and the lens on it Nikon 18-200mm. Shooting on ground I have a back up camera, a few lens, tripod, filters/reflectors, off cam flash, towel, extra batteries, business cards and umbrella.

Feedback

Get there early and claim a spot. enjoy the show, get to know the people around you full of Aloha. You want to experience the whole thing not just go and shoot the lanterns. There is a real law in Hawaii called the "Aloha Spirit Law" and that goes among photographers. Being courteous and respectful goes a long way and helps you get that perfect shot anywhere on the island.
