The "Salina la Colorada", about two hours south of Huatulco near the Pacific coast, has been providing salt for almost 1,000 years. It is flooded from the sea 4 times in November, then left to evaporate for 4 months. Today the salt is harvested by a cooperative with only 5 members because, said one, "no one wants to work." The salt is used primarily for industry and curing skins. A black necked stilt wades in the pond.
