Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a friends backyard. The model was a professional model. I am a self taught photographer, who learned from books and videos. I have an extensive photography library. I have also been serious about it for over 35 years. I had my own business for 6 years where I photographed weddings and other events.

Time

This was an afternoon shoot

Lighting

We used existing light aided with bounce reflectors.

Equipment

Sony a900, 70-400mm lens, f5.0, ISO 500, 1/250, 210mm focal length

Inspiration

The model was great at posing, one great pose after another. The shots just all fell together.

Editing

Very little post work was done, using FastStone Image Viewer. I do use adobe photoshop and lightroom, along with other photo editing software, depending on the effects I am trying to achieve.

In my camera bag

I have an extensive camera and lens collection. I usually carry an a99ii, and an a77ii camera with a 12-35, 24-105 and a 70-400. I shoot a wide variety of subject matter. So I may add some macro lenses to the mix. I mainly use my a900 for studio work, I also use an a850 with a shift/tilt adapter and several of my wide angle Bronica lenses (left over from wedding business) for architectural work. I have several tripods from a studio tripod to lightweight but sturdy travel tripods. I even use gorilla pods and clamps.

Feedback

Don't limit yourself to set rules. They are great to start off with, but if you only follow them, all your photos will start to look alike. To make a living you need to find a niche. But when shooting for fun, the sky is the limit. Photography is supposed to be fun after all. After I closed up my business, I was so burned out from photography, that I took a year hiatus. When I started taking photos again, I found that my creative spirit had returned.. Now I just shoot for the fun of it.
