I took this photo on the Camino de Santiago in Galicia, Spain in August, 2008. After dinner our hosts took us out to see what they called "one of the most beautiful views on the Camino". They were absolutely correct.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the village of O'Acebo in Galicia, Spain. I was walking the Camino de Santiago, a thousand year old pilgrimage route across northern Spain ending at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The locals say that this town has the most beautiful sunsets along the Camino

Time

Our hosts in the albergue took us out to see the ancient 'acebo' trees (holly) for which the town is named. They then led us up to an overlook where the setting sun, reflecting on the clouds was simply breathtaking. The silhouette of the cross at the site added meaning to the evening and provided a perfect focal point.

Lighting

The destination is the west of Spain so one is always walking towards the west. The beautiful summer setting sun is a promise of a new day and the continuing journey toward the setting sun.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a pocket Olympus point and shoot. It was my first digital camera and I took it because it was small and lightweight. I was just beginning in the world of digital photography.

Inspiration

To have come upon this place at such a moment was inspiring. There was a group of us, about 10 who were walking together. Everyone stood in different places to capture the view - it was memorable. Then we all just stood together, enjoying the sunset and the changing skies.

Editing

I did no post processing on this shot. I took it long before I became adept (not that I am now!) at using any sort of post processing software. I was still used to film - this camera was my first venture into digital photography.

In my camera bag

My Canon T1i with two lenses, a small tripod and a few filters.

Feedback

There are beautiful sunrises and sunsets daily. I would say the main thing is to always have a camera with you so that when you see a spectacular view, you can capture it!
