Day light here is very sharp later in the day that is why I usually take photos at the back on my deck before ten in summer time.Equipment
I used my sons Canon EOS 450D, no tripod, no flash because there was enough natural light.Inspiration
Trompie my dog loves to play with his toy dog. We had a good play and then I started photographing him while he was relaxing a bit. A bird came along and landed on the fence, that is why he looks in that direction! He loves to pose for me. At times when he is not interested he just won't stand still.Editing

Patience and be relaxed. Animals feel your excitement and they will react to it. It also takes time spending with the animal to make it feel at ease with the noise of the camera.
