Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Wild Life Sydney Zo during my 2012 trip to Sydney, Australia. This trip was my first time using a DSLR and the moment I met my spirit animal.

Time

My friends and I decided to go explore Sydney Harbor, so we started our day with a boat ride passing by the Sydney Opera house and under the bridge. After our boat ride we walked around the harbor and stumbled upon the zoo. This was taken April 15, 2012 at 4:25pm.

Lighting

We were very lucky to have arrived when we did. The sun was beginning to set and the koala had just woken up for a snack break. I simply used natural lighting and tried various angles to get a shot where the koalas expression was the main focus.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon Rebel T3i, with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

My simple desire to photograph my amazing trip to Australia was the reason this picture was taken. I had the mission of capturing my "spirit animal" in another state. Usually when I look up images of koalas, they are eating, sleeping or carrying their young. I wanted to capture a koala with character and I'd say I captured a sassy confident koala.

In my camera bag

At the moment I only work with my Canon Rebel T3i, with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

Feedback

Aim to take the picture in the late afternoon. Depending on the animal you have to be patient and go along with its daily routine. Use a higher zoom lense and stay at a good distance. You don't want to frighten the animal. If your able to interact with it and spend some time with it to capture a closer shot then great!
