Location
This wonderful pool is on Maui's Road to Hana. It is off the "Twin Falls" trail, which leads to two other larger falls. This location is a bit harder to get to and cannot be seen from the path, so most folks walk right on by without seeing it. When I got here, several people were having fun doing full-body splashing into the water.Time
This was about 10:30 AM.Lighting
This pool was pretty much in shade, but there was dappling of light here and there. I wanted to capture that water fall as a soft blur, but still wanted to keep the people as sharp as possible. So, I had to trade off the water blurring plan for a faster shutter.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Powershot SX30. No flash or filters. I used a bean bag for added stability.Inspiration
I enjoy seeing how other photographers capture moving water and keep trying to get the perfect waterfall. I was initially disappointed that I didn't have this pool all to myself (maybe next trip to Maui??). But then I realized that the people having fun was a great opportunity as well.Editing
Nothing special.... some cropping, sharpening and color enhancement. In my camera bag
I carry my Canon Powershot SX50 for most activities. This camera does a good job on a wide range of situations. I use a Canon DSLR at home for when I set up studio shots.Feedback
Plan your shoot ahead of time. Unless you don't mind sharing the location, try to get there early or at a time of little use. Scout the location ahead of time if possible to find the best positions for shooting (keep the location of the sun in mind). Take plenty of shots from more than one position. Turn your camera off for a minute during the shoot to just watch the scene in front of you before shooting again. I like placing the camera at ground (water) level and suggest doing this to catch closer features in the water. If you are not familiar with shooting water falls, there is plenty of articles online available for free. Check your shots during the shoot so that you can tweak the camera settings to get the image you want. You don't want to look at the photos in an editor the next day to see that you didn't get close to what you wanted.
