Behind The Lens

Location

at home in Ireland in County Wicklow

Time

this was just at dawn and the first light of day is hitting the white beam tree, it was early Spring.

Lighting

The camera I use is simple enough but there is one thing which I use a lot which is the light meter inside the camera in the program settings , I usually use the spot feature because it allows me to choose the lighting I want most successfully. For me it is all about controlling the light.. in many ways light can be the worst enemy of the kind of photos I take because it can destroy shape.

Equipment

my camera is a cannon photo shot SX230

Inspiration

I am a fine art painter and I was hugely interested in the blossom around this Spring and so I was out a lot in all lights and weather painting and taking photographs , just immersing myself in the time and the trees all around here. This tree is called white beam because of the leaves which are a beautiful silvery greenish white and these are the leaf buds emerging. Mostly I take photos for painting reference so I have to try to find the composition and the light which will capture the things I want to remember, to paint.. in this way the photo is not really an end in itself but a tool, it is interesting because this can remove a self conscious approach while taking the photo and it is sometimes better in itself for that.

Editing

With this I did no post processing. Sometimes photos need the tone adjusting using levels. I use Corel paint shop pro.

In my camera bag

just the camera and a spare battery.

Feedback

My advice is to connect with the subject rather than with the task of making a photograph. Allow yourself to become genuinely inspired and enthusiastic about your subject and think carefully about what you are taking the photo for, and sometimes go out without a camera just to look.
