Behind The Lens

Location

This images was taken in Central Queensland Australia outside a mining town called Blackwater.

Time

This image was taken on a winters morning, it was not a planned shot, I was driving out to work and noticed the light was changing colours quite rapidly, I pulled up in a place where I had a clear view of the horizon, it was to be such a perfect choice as the sun came up it was directly behind some protected "scar" trees, the silhouette makes the landscape almost look like an African vista.

Lighting

The image is untouched, the colours and features are all natural, the sun and sky colours on the day did not need any enhancement.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Canon EOS 350D, handheld, no flash or additional equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the colours in the sky and the contract I saw in the landscape, this image has not been able to be reproduced since I am glad I was there at the time to see this amazing opportunity

Editing

Simple post processing in photoshop only to merge 2 exposed files together. The images was not intended as a HDR, I edited the image in Lightroom and exported 2 versions from the raw file and merged them in Photoshop to get some details into the foreground exposure.

In my camera bag

Normally these days I carry mirrorless equipment (Olympus OMD) M43, I only operate handheld or using available environment objects for stabilisation (walls, posts, floor) Back then I was carrying only my Canon 400D, but now as a professional wedding photographer I do have quite a lot of gear in the bag for that role,For weddings I shoot only Canon equipment in a mix of film and digital (Canon EOS5, Canon AE1, Canon EOS 5D MK II)

Feedback

wait for the moment, don't be in a hurry, scout out some places you think look fantastic, and visit them regularly at different times and dates, the seasons will present you with more colours and textures than you can imaging. The key is patience, if you wait and wait and wait, you will get your moment and it will be all worth it :)
