Location
I took this photo at Tamarama beach, which is the neighbor to the more famous Bondi beach, in Sydney Australia. I was living there for one year together with my girlfriend, as a result of many years of dreaming. You may say im a dreamer, but im not the only one. I dont know if its a cliché or not, but its a powerful expression, so i dont care.Time
The day before i took this photo it was exactly the same weather front rolling in. I was in the water surfing, and it blew my mind away. I had never seen any thing like this before. Heavy rain, thunder, lightning and strong wind. All over in about 1 hour. The day after I was chilling on my balcony, sunny, warm and no wind. Around 2pm, i felt the wind was increasing. I could glimpse the same cloud rolling in, I knew it would only last for a short time. I packed my backpack with camera, a bag of chips and two beers. Jumped on my skateboard, and raced down to a cliff i knew would keep me safe. The cloud was rolling closer, and i cracked a bottle.Lighting
The natural light was changing almost every minute. The cloud was rolling fast, and covered more and more of the sky. It was a mix between twister and northern lights, I was filled with awe. Then the flash of thunder and lightning started, i had to sit down and watch.Equipment
I was using my Olympus E-PL1 camera, no tripod or equipment. Just holding it steady with the neck strap, as I was taking a series of photos, click, click, click, click. I tried many times to catch the right one, which included the lighting flash. Its no simple way of catching the lighting on a photo, just a lot of snapping. Click!Inspiration
The day before inspired me to take this photo. It was a big bunch of surfers in the water at Bondi, like always. But when this cloud came rolling in, everybody stopped looking for waves, and stared at the sky. As it came closer, more and more people got out of the water. I got a feeling I should probably do the same. It was this feeling that really inspired me, mother nature showing its powers.Editing
I stitched the series of photos together in photoshop, using photomerge. I adjusted the sharpness, color and contrast a bit, but not much more. I would maybe say the sharpness is to high, but im so impressed by the cloud that its hard to do any more adjustments. In my camera bag
My equipment has always been really simple. The E-PL1 is the best camera i have owned. So in my bag its just this, and sometimes a mini tripod. I would like to get a better camera, but as I am just a hobby photographer Im still learning. But still my backpack is full of equipment: skate tools, sketch book, headphones, swiss army knife, towel and snorkeling gear (when I was in Australia). In Norway, where im from, the towel and snorkeling gear is changed with binoculars and a warm jacket.Feedback
My advice to others is to my self as well. Go out, in nature, stay there and see what happens. You might have to sit and stare, or feel whats happening to understand which moment that is worth snapping. For me its sometimes a kind of meditation. Charge your camera before, bring stuff that you might think will be useful. As much as i like photography i would say: Don´t waste time on taking to many pictures, you might miss the special moment. YEW!
