Location
I am based in Sunbury on Thames in the UK however, my eldest sister lives in North Carolina and I wanted to make a surprise visit for her 70th birthday party. She lives near Surf City, Topsail Island. This is the pier I fished off and it struck me as being a beautiful structure.Time
We were sitting on the beach one sunny afternoon and I wandered off with camera in hand.Lighting
The underside of the pier was very dark and it posed a challenge to show the detail in the pier's construction without the use of flash and tripod.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 5D Mk ll. 24mm -105mm IS USM f4L lens at 1/40 shutter speed f18 for greater depth of field and 100 ISO. Image stabilization proved invaluable in taking this shot at such a low shutter speed.Inspiration
The day before I had caught six fish off this pier and seeing it from a fresh angle with its geometric form inspired me.Editing
I processed first in Aperture 3 creating three images from one. One over exposed by one stop and one under exposed by one stop. With the correct exposed image I loaded them into Photomatix Pro and tonemapped in HDR. Some further minor tweeking was made and I now have a 4 foot canvas hanging in my bedroom as a reminder of happy times in Surf City NC.In my camera bag
I normally carry Canon 5D Mk ll and a backup Canon 40D. Lenses include 70-200mm 2.8L, 16-35mm 2.8L, 50mm 1.8 and 24-105mm f4L. Speedlight 580EX ll, Spare batteries and remote shutter release. A Manfrotto 190B Pro tripod.Feedback
If I were planning to take a similar shot of this pier I would use a tripod and shoot at the end of the day or early morning. I would probably shoot at f16 with a faster shutter speed but keep to 100 ISO. Happy shooting.
