Behind The Lens

Location

The original picture was taken, in September 2005, at Brasov, Romania, where chess is played very seriously by men after work. There are several tables such as this in the central park; maximum zoom enabled me to take the picture without disturbing their play.

Time

I cannot remember the exact time it was taken, but it was late afternoon or very early evening. It was actually snapped without much thought, one of a series of pictures taken while strolling through the town. It was only later that I realised what I'd captured.

Lighting

I had absolutely no choice about lighting; it was what it was, and fortunately it was bright natural light without too much glare.

Equipment

A hand-held Nikon SQ digital compact camera. Yes, that's right - no fancy equipment. I bought my fist digital SLR (a Canon D300) in 2007.

Inspiration

Initially, just to record what I'd seen.

Editing

The main subject was picked out in Photoshop and isolated from the background; the background was then rendered in black-and-white and blurred. The original background has quite a lot of distracting detail, all in focus; it's a good snapshot, but processing in Photoshop turned it into this picture.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, a Canon D6 with a 24-70 F2.8 zoom lens and a 70-200 USM II F2.8 zoom lens, with x2 converter. I carry a tripod when I can, but when travelling overseas I rely on a monopod that doubles as a walking stick.

Feedback

Be observant; get the best picture you can, especially (as here) when you may not have very much time to compose or find the best viewpoint or lighting. Then adjust it carefully in Photoshop, making good use of Layers.
