Behind The Lens

Location

I was taking photographs for my on-line photography course and I would often go to Parvins State Park in New Jersey USA to capture the amount of images needed for my course. This is one of the many photographs that I used to help get my Associates Degree in Photography. I still continue to visit the park to see what other wonderful scenes that I can capture and share with the world.

Time

I can still remember walking along the path that goes around the lake at Parvins State Park and watching the people going about their activities. It was in the evening and I was experimenting with the exposure on my camera to see what kind of results I would get while the sun was setting. I came across the people fishing and I watched and waited for the boat in the lake to get into a better position in the frame of the camera. When the boat was in position the lady happened to move into a perfect position for me to capture the scene. This image was taken on June 05, 2013 at 8:34pm (EST).

Lighting

I was actually experimenting with the exposure setting on my camera when I captured this image. The sun was setting in the background and I wanted to get more of a silhouette scene so in order to do that I had to lower my exposure setting to make the image darker which resulted in the background turning more yellowish and orange than it acually appeared in person. This image has taught me to always try different things with my camera because you never know when you might capture an amazing photograph even when it doesn't appear to the naked eye.

Equipment

This photograph was captured with a Canon T3i, EF-S55-250mm, f/4-5.6 IS. The settings were ISO100, focal length 109mm, 1/40 sec at f/13 and no flash.

Inspiration

I was looking to take some evening images for my class assignment and the park is always a good place to get a variety of photographs. As I was walking the trail the people fishing caught my eye so I took a few shots. After reviewing the results on the camera, I decided that I wanted the people fishing to be silhouettes so you couldn't really see who was in the image. I made some camera adjustments and managed to get the result I had in my mind.

Editing

I used Lightroom to fine tune the exposure and no other adjustments were done.

In my camera bag

At the moment I only have one camera which is the Canon T3i. I had purchased a bundle package that included the 18mm-55mm and the 55mm-250mm lenses so they are also always in my bag. I also keep an extra battery, extra sd card and a cleaning kit. I find that sometimes while out in the natural environment I need to clean my lenses.

Feedback

Dusk and dawn are the best times to capture amazing images using the natural sunlight. Always keep in mind that you can also adjust your camera settings to help create unique photographs that you can not see with the naked eye. For example when I was looking at the scene in the photograph I actually saw more blues and pinks in the sky and I could make out the people who were fishing so by adjusting the camera settings I was able to create the image that I visualized in my mind.
