Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my flat in London.

Time

17:35

Lighting

It was indoors but with AWB and even with lamp light, the color was true.

Equipment

This was taken with my old Nikon D60, 18-200 Nikor lens held freehand. F4.5 at 1/20 of a second at 36mm

Inspiration

This was a homework assignment in which we were asked to do a 'self-portrait'. I wanted to do something other then a photo of me with a camera in my face. This 'charm bracelet' is filled with momentos from trips, people, places, hobbies, events, at home and abroad. I tried to take the photo with the bracelet on my arm but always ended up covering up one of the charms. Ultimately I photographed it on a deep grain wood surface.

Editing

Looking at the metadata and adjustments, there are absolutely no changes to the original jpeg

In my camera bag

I now use a Nikon D7000 and alternate between a 1.4 'nifty' 50mm lens and my 18-200 lens that I've used for years. The depth of field with the 1.4 is incredible. The 18-200 gives me a lot of options when doing street photography. I've recently started using a lens pen to make certain the surface of my lens is free of any dust, finger prints, smudges and I find this very useful. Also, I've moved to a JOBY cross body side strap that connects to the tripod screw at the base of the camera.

Feedback

Don't always look for the literal translation in taking photos. The items on this bracelet are very representative of who I am - a traveller, christian, parent, graduate, hobbies, etc. Try different angles of view, different composition, cropping, and techniques available on your camera such as fish eye, zoom/twist the lens with a long shutter speed etc.
