I took this photo of the baby goose inside the barn of a man called Raül, who holds poultry as hobby. I met Raül at a cattle fair near Girona (Spain) earlier this year where he was exposing some beautiful samples of hens and roosters. I asked him if I could come some time to take some photographs of them.Time
The photo was taken in the afternoon. As the temperature was rather low, the little goose could only be taken from his "nursery" (a small place with a warm lamp) for a few minutes, to avoid it would cool down.Lighting
As the lighting in the barn was low, I used a couple of speedlites. The first was set up behind from the top, at approx. 2 o'clock, with a rogue flash grid to concentrate the light. The second was placed at about 45 degrees from the side-front with a small Rogue flash bender.Equipment
The image was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon EF 70-300 L IS USM lens at 300 mm, f/13 and ISO 100. I took the shot hand-held as the little goose wouldn't stay very still - a tripod wouldn't have allowed to recomposition quickly to adjust to his movements.Inspiration
Although I initially visited Raül to photograph some of his other poultry, by chance there were just a number of those little geese being born. I think any kind of birth is fascinating - even though it may have some moments which seem a little "brutal". As I had never attended "live" the birth of any kind of birth I wanted to not only see it myself, but hoped to be able to share it with others as well.Editing
Very little post-processing was done in Lightroom CS5. A minor tweak in exposure, clarity & light, and an increase of a few points of the yellow/orange saturation. Then a dark vignette around it to further focus on the little goose. In my camera bag
Most of the time my Canon 5D MkIII has the 24-105 lens on it for its versatility. However, when travelling, I love to bring along as well a 16-35 mm lens and the above mentioned 70-300 L IS lens, which is sensibly smaller and lighter then the 70-200 L IS and has the additional zoom as premium. When volume and weight allows (especially important for a female photographer who loves to travel light!), I also try to bring a small speetlight (Canon EX430II, Yongnuo flash triggers and a small carbon fibre tripod or monopod).Feedback
Don't be shy to ask somebody if you can take pictures - giving some beautiful photographs in return will make most people say "yes"! When photographing animals, especially in this kind of situation, be careful to not disturbing, stressing or potentially damaging the animal. Do short sessions at a time, then let the animal go back to its trusted surrounding until he finds himself again relaxed.
