was this shot at the Canadian Tire at Trafalgar and Dundas last fall? If so I shot the same ride the same time you shot this. There was another photographer there setting his tripod when I was there. If not, I still have a good memory. :)

Location
I shot this one at the Exhibition grounds in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.Time
About 1030pmLighting
Light was all natural, no flashEquipment
Nikon D300s, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX, Nikon mc36a cable release and a Vanguard Alta Pro tripodInspiration
I had been studying long exposure photography recently and I just got my new Tokina 11-16 so I was just itching for an opportunity to work on some urban long exposure images and when I heard that the exhibition in town well let's just say mission accepted;) As an added bonus admission was free after 10pm! So I decided to grab my gear, my girl friend and a few buck for caramel apples...mmmm. Once there I spent about 90min capturing several dozen images of the various rides. I managed to come home with several images that I like from that session but this was my instant favorite just based on colour and compositional elements.Editing
Very minimal post processing done in Lightroom. I applied a lens correction profile for my brand new Tokina 11-16mm followed by fine tuning the exposure, highlights and shadows and added about +7 to the vibrance and +3 on saturation. Lastly I tamed the image noise and applied my sharpening. I decided to many a couple virtual copies and tweak my edits for more specific uses, ie Web use and two local printers in my area that calibrate their printers and post profiles online that I can then plugin to Lightroom to get a super accurate print. In my camera bag
Nikon D300s, Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D(cheap but amazing!), Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro, Nikon sb700 flash plus tungsten and fluorescent light filters, Nikon mc36a cable release and a Vanguard Alta Pro tripod. After the big stuff I carry a Xrite color checker passport, three circular polarizers and a few clear UV mainly for protection in rough conditions. Rocket blower a couple cleaning clothes and a set of lens pens. Extra batteries, memory cards(sd and cf), Gorilla pod mainly for my flash, at least one flashlight and my tripod and multi tools.Feedback
For this particular shot I believe location selection is priority. Exhibition and fair grounds can b very high traffic areas, not easy to set up and use a tripod without people bumping into you, it or walking through your frame. You must find a place out of the way the large crowds of people while still keeping the main components that you wish to include in your shot. In my my case those being a foreground ride, a background ride, consession stand and both people still and moving. Once you have spot set up the tripod, camera and cable or remote release, (if you don't have a release just use your cameras self timer for 5sec), set your ISO speed very low to keep sensor noise down. Then pick your white balance and aperture which in my shot was about F22. After that you can set the shutter speed to bulb and experiment with a few different speeds on your remote until you get the right exposure and effect. At this point if you find that you need a longer shutter speed but your exposure is good you can close down the aperture a little more till the right mix is achieved. Good hunting fellow shooters and keep in mind there is always more than one way accomplish any shot.
