Thank you very much everyone for the nice comments. Was very pleased to get a Feature on the front page...I have a soft spot for this photo anyway, it's one of my favourites.

Very interesting HDR processing--subtle and beautifully muted color tones verge on desaturation in certain areas, yet the overall effect is harmonious rather than visually discordant.

Thank you, and you are correct. I did want saturation and desaturation, but didn't just want a 2selective colour" approach. :)
Cheers.
Cheers.

Thanks. We like Scarborough, especially off-season when it's not very busy. Very cold then, though! :)

Location
This photo was taken from the beach at Scarborough South Bay, North Yorkshire, UK. It shows the Grand Hotel on the right, as well as residences and hotels and also the beach.Time
It was about 3.30 to 4pm. It was on New Year's Day and so the light was fading early.Lighting
The light was natural, but the clouds were drawing in and causing the orange sky. It was a cold day, and I was lucky that the skies were not just bland. The sun was setting behind the bridge in the middle.Equipment
This was my old 40D and a 50mm f1.8. Handheld, no flash. It is a HDR composite of 5 bracketed images.Inspiration
I take a similar photograph every time I go to Scarborough. We love the area, and go regularly, especially in the winter - I find it fantastic that people still go to the beach in the middle of a British winter...:)Editing
Yes, it is edited using Nik EFEX HDR Pro in the first instance. I used "Granny's Attic" preset as the starting point and then adjusted from there. This made for a very noisy image, so there is quite a bit of noise reduction, in Photoshop, and then some manipulation of the colours, but only in terms of contrast and a little saturation boost/reduction in certain parts of the image. In my camera bag
I now use a Canon 1D Mark IIn. I use a canon 50mm f1.8, and a Canon 75-300 for zoom. I also have a cheap 28-80mm canon lens but that is used less and less these days. I carry very little else.Feedback
I was lucky to get the lighting as it was, but it was knowing to do it just then, and to bracket the shot, as it would not have exposed correctly any other way. I watched for certain people moving into shot, and spotted the trio with the dog taking photographs and had to include them. Position was important to get the balance of buildings both sides, and also to get the reflection in the wet sand.
