Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Hastings on a beautifully clear day. Early start meant less people on the beach.

Time

Some of my best photos are taken during the early hours of the day, around sunrise or just after. Early morning sun creates amazing colours and the air is often clear this early.

Lighting

Natural light from the sun, especially early morning, makes for great colours and lighting.

Equipment

This shot was taken using a Nikon D5000 with the kit 18-55mm lens. Camera body having an articulated display made it easy to get down low and capture this photo.

Inspiration

I'd been playing with depth of field for a while, particularly creating shallow depth of field by keeping the aperture wide open. When walking on the beach I noticed tyre tracks and thought that could make an interesting photo, especially if the camera is placed on the tyre track to exaggerate the vanishing point. Taking the photo low also helped bring out the tread pattern left by the tyre.

Editing

No post processing was used on this photo.

In my camera bag

I keep my camera charged and bag packed so last minute photo shoots are always possible, just grab my bag and go. Only use the one camera body, A Nikon D5000 which I upgraded from my first DSLR, a Nikon D60 which proved to be a great companion in my early photography days. Carry a real mixed bag of lenses ranging from a Tamron 10-24mm wide angle lens right up to a Tamron 70-300mm lens. Have a couple of prime lenses, Nikon 35mm and 50mm as well as my daily workhorse Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. Also carry a Nikon speedlight flash and various filters.

Feedback

Get up early when the air is clear and the natural lighting creates amazing colours. Get down low, even put the camera on the floor, to obtain a different aspect for your photos. I've had some great results by placing the camera where you'd not think to put it. Works well placing it very high too.
