I have wanted to get a shot like that for so long! Takes lots of guts! Great job!

Behind The Lens

Location

Bear Creek Lake Regional Park, Morrison, Colorado.

Time

Late afternoon. I had just returned from Africa and wanted to see and document the impacts of the 500 year floods the front range experience in September 2013. The water level of Bear Creek Lake (a reservoir) had risen by 58 feet!

Lighting

Beautiful Colorado fall day with warm afternoon light.

Equipment

Sony SLT-77 with 75-400 mm lens and monopod.

Inspiration

This wonderfully ornery dude...a prairie rattlesnake was moving back to his home area after the flood waters receded and stopped to bask in the warm afternoon sun. He was none too pleased at my interest in him which gave me great photographic opportunity. By the way, I have had a life-long love for snakes and this guy's ill humor was quite endearing.

Editing

Lightroom 5. White balance, sharpening, cropping.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D w 16-105 mm, Canon 7D w 100-400 mm, and Sony NEX 7 w 18-50 mm and 50-210 mm.

Feedback

I was lucky that I had my big lens in the car and was able to retrieve it in minutes. Without that lens it would have been difficult to get this shot and not get struck.
