Location
This photo is the old smock mill at herringfleet engand its about 2miles north from Somerlayton in suffolk. Its right on the edge of the marshes on the broads. This was one of my first sunsets with a digital camera and I have been back several times again looking for that better shot.Time
This was taken at sunset and its a very peaceful place to be as its about 20mins walk from the nearest road over rough terain and through woods ect.Lighting
When doing your sunsets timing is everything, go to early and you will stand around board go to late and you could miss all the action. I like to turn up 1 hour before sunset. You need setting up time. Position to the sun is everything here, I had to jump over the fence and wonder down the field to get the water in this shot. Remember that at different times of the year the sun will be in a different place. To get the shot here it has to be early spring as the sun starts setting more to the left as time go on so you lose the effect on the water.Equipment
Nikon D7000 10-24mm nikon lens tripod and a cheap shutter cableInspiration
I love nature, the broads, the smell of the marshes, the sound of cattle mooing in the distance, the change in temperature as the sun fall behind the horizon and the cool mist starts to rise like a blanket covering the land. Then that walk in the dark back to the car striking a little fear to your bones as you are the only one out there.Editing
it's an HDR and its processed through photomatix its 3 photos +2ev & -2ev then I play around with my sliders to get what I like in my work. I like the colourful side of things as this is how I see it in my world. It's not ever ones cup of tea but I only do this for me and if you like it then you can see it to??In my camera bag
Only take the lens you are going to shoot with that day. If you take more you will see something else like a long range shot and keep changing lens and never really settle your self into the purpose of why you went there.I love wide angle so 10-24mm is always there on now Im using lees filters so it's an 09 Grad, 06 Grad, and a polariser filter. A spudz cleaning cloth is essential and comes highly recommend.shutter release cable, Spare battery "charged"Feedback
Its a waiting game first pick a location and scout it well for the sun and where it sets,Then spend the next few months hanging out you window watching the sun drop to see if could be the right night for you. the more water there is the better shot you will get as I love reflections. Shooting into the sun brings all sorts of problems like lens flare ect. I was shooting here one evening and as I checked my photos they had spots on them so I looked at the lens to find a disco of tiny flys camping on out on it. As the sun sets you only have minutes to call the shots, don't waist them talking to friends and don't forget to look over your shoulder as the sky can look better behind you.
