Location
This photo was taken on Santa Monica beach.Time
This photo was taken at sunset.Lighting
The sun setting behind the pier made for great color and silhouette. There was a mist in the air which made the light streams more obvious and dramatic. The air was crisp and cool; there was a breeze.Equipment
Equipment used included a Canon 6D with a 16-35mm lens; it was handheld.Inspiration
In the mid 90's, my husband and I lived in the LA area while going to college (we moved there from Texas for school). We were young and didn't have kids, yet. After college, we moved back home to Texas to start our family. While living in LA, we didn't have a lot of extra money to spend and we used to go to Santa Monica beach most Friday nights to hang out at the beach and stroll the pier. In 2014, we took our four kids back to Los Angeles to explore and reminisce. My husband and I sat on the beach and watched our kids play in the sand. There was a sea breeze and the air was salty; due to the cool weather, we were the only ones on the beach. I had my camera and took a picture of the pier - very sentimental, as it was our past and current lives coming together.Editing
There was not much post processing to this image; basic sharpening and toning. In my camera bag
I usually have my camera body (currently a Canon 1dx v. 2), a wide angle (16-35mm), telephoto (70-200mm), and a 50mm 1.2 prime.Feedback
Shooting this image in manual mode was important in order to properly capture the silhouette. The meter suggested I was underexposed, which of course I wanted to capture the color in the sky. There were many seagulls flying around so I waited a few moments until the bird was placed in the right spot (composition wise). This perfect lighting also lasted only a few minutes so it all happened pretty fast.
