Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Dungeness in the UK, I'm a self taught photographer and currently studying a diploma in becoming a professional freelance.

Time

This is probably my favourite time of the day despite losing a few Z'ds to appreciate it, I got up at half two in the morning for a two and hour drive down to the coast which that in turn gave me time to set up and prepare for the sunrise for around 5:00am.

Lighting

With the lighting on this scene being really strong when the sun arose above the horizon I wanted try achieve a smooth water affect whilst retaining some of the detail as well, therefore I used a ND filter and a Graduated filter. This allowed me to select a slower enough shutter speed to capture this.

Equipment

The most important part of equipment I used was a Sony A77 DSLT camera, and to aid me in capturing this shot I also a Tripod and a cokin filter set.

Inspiration

I love anything to do with planet earth right across board from such as Wildlife to nature to landscapes to sunrises & sunsets literally anything that is natural or naturally inspired. so I when look at other professional photo's taken, it is this that inspires me to go out there try and do it for myself and show my audience of the beauty that I see in the natural world because at the end of the day it is beautiful planet we all live on...

Editing

I did do a little post-processing on the picture, All I have done is adjusted the levels slightly, I've also brought out the colours a little bit more to make them more vibrant and also I've removed any blemishes, dust spots and any distracting marks. so apart this the picture you see is how it was taken.

In my camera bag

What I usually carry in my camera bag is first of all is my pride and joy that is my Sony A77 camera. I also normally carry a flashgun for any kind macro shots or any shots that require a bit of light thrown on. Also in my bag I have a telephoto lens just in case if I decide to do some say wildlife shots I pack a telephoto lens for this. I have a wide angle lens for any landscapes, sunrises some filters to go with i.e. polarisers, ND and & graduated filters... then down to the smaller things I carry spare batteries, cleaning clothes, remote control, and cables.

Feedback

The advice I would give is to others is 'be prepared' do you research first and cover all the basics such as charge the batteries, clean your lenses and get your bag ready, also check things like the weather report before you go... then get to the location early to give yourself plenty of time to set up and to find the location/composition. then on the technical side of things, use a sturdy tripod, ideally a camera remote for slower shutter speeds and use filters - polarisers, ND's and graduated ones are ideal... getting the picture manually focus for landscapes, place the focus point in the middle of the picture and use small aperture to capture the detail.
