Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my garden in Wellington, New Zealand. I was just starting out on really focusing on flower photography and the beauty in just shooting flowers from all angels and perspectives.

Time

This shot was taken about 4.30pm on a gorgeous

Lighting

For me natural light is best and I aim for this as much as I can.

Equipment

This was taken on one of my earlier cameras :) Sony DSLR A100 45mm focal length ISO 125 1/80 sec at f/5.6 Handheld

Inspiration

Like I said, I was really just starting to get into taking pictures of flowers and finding my 'zone' and 'style' in photography. I was particularly drawn to the contrast of the colours of the fuscia's petals and the strength in the stamens. I often look at how to shoot flowers from different angles and was intrigued in how the flower this way; usually the stamens hang downwards and the petals look like a dress - here the flower was lying on its side.

Editing

At this stage of my photography journey - post-processing was something I really didn't know much about. The most I did in this case, was to crop slightly to give a square aspect to the shot.

In my camera bag

Wow great question - the kind I always read too - to see if I can pick up any tips/ideas of what to add to my bag :) Here goes - these days a SONY A99 full frame camera body, and usually my 100mm macro lens. Lens cloths, batteries, battery charger, spare cards, grey card ref card, tinfoil (great mini reflector), foldable reflector that fits on my lens, pegs, sheet of white paper and sometimes some rolled up black card. There are usually headache tablets, tissues, chewing gum and a bottle of water in there too.

Feedback

Try to capture what you see and have fun when shooting what ever it is you're shooting. When working with flowers - don't be shy 'work the subject' ... they don't complain of aches and pains, being too tired or having the sun in their eyes - so really work the subject to your full advantage. If cut flowers - play with different backgrounds and different focal lengths etc. Take the time to smell the roses, the daisies, fuscias and all the other different flowers out there - they look gorgeous in real life and in photos :)
